1645 La Solution

• Acryl auf Leinwand 15 x 15 cm • Acrylic on canvas 5.9 x 5.9 inches •

»Was bedeutet das?«

Marie-Claire looked up at the Commissioner.
»I knew you'd figure it out. But Alfonse died in kind of a terrible accident. On the way back from the Bar Tabac I passed the jewelry store. I saw the Citroën and found an unconscious Alfonse lying on the floor. I ran as fast as I could back to the castle. Edouard was married to a real bitch who was barely older than me. She was constantly harassing me. So I gave her the cigarettes I shopped for her and rushed to my Edouard. Long before I had fallen in love with him. Alfonse was crazy about me, but I always saw him just as a good friend. A few minutes later and Edouard and me arrived at the jewelry store. The trunk of the car-la Déesse- was open. We were totally amazed as we saw that it was packed with jewelry and money.«
Lunel took up the thread.
»I think Alfonse recognized the window of the jewelry store wide open. He knew the shopkeeper was sitting and watching TV in the bar. I suppose, in the first moment he just wanted to swipe only an engagement ring for you, Madame de Mirabeau. You said, he was crazy about you. But it's a common saying – opportunity makes a thief.«
»Oui,« Madame answered, »But Alfonse showed no more signs of life. He was dead. Quelle merde – eh, pardon. An accident, Monsieur le Commisssaire. In this fateful moment Edouard looked at me and we both knew exactly what to do. We packed Alfonse into the back seat and drove the car into the garage. We made it look as though Edouard killed himself with car exhausts. The motive we gave the police was quite clear – his unrequited love for me. We were hiding the jewels and the money in the castle.«
The Commissioner scratched his head.
»Of course, at this time, nobody had the idea to suspect Alfonse of robbery. The suicide certainly wasn't examined as accurate as nowadays. You and Edouard now shared a secret. Too bad for you, that in the search for a missing cat the past week, all garages were searched. They found this ominous suitcase full of old money. What's the hell...«
Madame de Mirabau laughed, »Oui, la monnaie! We think the jeweler himself must have been stolen it. Or he operated some weird business for the filmstars, who knows? We didn't know if the bills had registered serial numbers. Anyway, there were those 3 million old francs. It was too dangerous to touch them. They had about the same value as an engagement ring from La Roques. We thought it would be a shame to burn the money. And thus, we never wanted to go back to the car in which we had transported the poor dead Alfonse, we packed the money in his beloved car.«
The view of the Commissioner cleared up. »Now I understand. And Edouard then separated from his bitch, as you named her and then married you soon, Marie-Claire?«
»Yes and no. The divorce took place in 1972. It was kind of a scandal for the townies. But we got married late in the 90s. Well, Edouard died three years ago. He suffered a heart attack. – Am I supposed to go in jail, Monsieur le Commissaire?«
Lunel savored his short moment; »Well, there absolutely are no exceptions for you, Madame. You are determined for §5a of the Criminal Procedure Code« he improvised.
Marie-Claire's eyes widened. »What does that mean?«
»Your crime became statute-barred 30 years ago.« he smiled.
