Bei dieser Serie habe ich ausschließlich selbst fotografierte Bilder aus dem Ordner "Zeugs" genommen. Darin sammele ich eigentlich solche Motive, die auf den ersten Blick "interessant" erscheinen, aber dann irgendwie doch nicht. Habe erst später gemerkt, dass ich das mittlere Bild -Chateau de Beynac- schon einmal gemalt hatte.

In this series, I used only own photographies from the "stuff" folder. I am actually collecting such motifs, which at first glance appear "interesting", but on a second guess "no not really". I noticed later that I had painted the middle one (Chateau de Beynac) already.

Die Übung vom Donnerstag – ein Bild mit möglichst wenigen Strichen zu malen – war eine besondere Herausforderung. Ich habe dies nun etwas modifiziert und mich einem kleinen Malmarathon unterzogen. Die nächsten 12 Bilder habe ich alle quasi gleichzeitig gemalt. Also begonnen -wie immer- mit der dunkelsten Farbe und dann immer heller werdend bis hin zum Weiß. Ich habe dann reihum (von Bild 1 bis Bild 12) immer jeweils dieselbe Farbe benutzt. Ziel der Übung ist es, a) schnell zu malen und b) Informationen zu reduzieren und c) in einem durchgängigen Stil und d) mit denselben Farben zu malen, was e) eine "innere Harmonie" innerhalb dieser Bilderserie ergibt. 

Little Gems 1-3

The exercise from Thursday – to paint a picture with as few strokes as possible – was an extraordinary challenge. I have modified this and changed to a small painting marathon. I painted the next 12 pictures almost simultaneously. I started - as always - with the darkest color and then getting brighter all the way to white. One by one, I used (from picture 1 to picture 12) always the same color. The goal of this exercise is a) to paint quickly and b) to reduce information in c) a consistent style with d) the same colors, which e) creates an "inner harmony" within this series.

The challenge of the week on my DPW auction site, was to paint with as few strokes as possible. Here you can see my experiment with 12 brushstrokes. It was allowed to apply the brush only once per stroke.

Am Sonntag war dann der sogenannte Sketchcrawl, also das freie Treffen aller begeisterten Zeichner aus der Umgebung. Die Stadt war voll mit in der Sonne sitzenden und skizzierenden Menschen. Ein tolles Erlebnis! Ich habe mal wieder Gouachefarben ausprobiert. 

Allerdings sind die Farben diesmal sehr matt aufgetrocknet: "Interessant".

On Sunday the free meeting of all the enthusiastic draughtsmen from the area took place. The city was full of people sitting and sketching in the sun. What a great experience! Once again, I tried gouache colors. 

However, they look very dull: "interesting".

These are water soluble and dry off velvety and matte.

My short summary: A great alternative to watercolor paints.

Bei diesem Bild habe ich erstmals Acrylfarben mit dem Zusatz "Open" benutzt.
Das heißt, dass diese beim Draußenmalen nicht so schnell trocknen, wie normale Farben. Mir hat das ganz gut gefallen und die Farbe war sogar auch auf Papier noch längere Zeit vermalbar.

In this painting I used acrylic paints with "open" formulation.
This means that they do not dry as fast as normal colors. 
It worked, even on paper. I liked it very much.

2190 Kunst im Nu?

• Acryl auf Papier 330 g/m² - Studie • 

Heute eine kleine Lerneinheit zur Landschaftsmalerei. Leider entpuppt sich nicht jede Landschaftsmalerei als voller Erfolg. Besonders, wenn man vor Ort im Freien malt, entstehen oft die berüchtigten 50% Müll. 
Pah! Ich wäre ja froh, wenn es nur fünfzig Prozent wären.
Fehlerquelle #1 
ist die Motivwahl bzw. die Wahl des Bildausschnitts. Ich habe hier viel zu viele Kleinigkeiten ins Bild setzen wollen. Eine drastische Reduzierung der Formen und / oder ein besserer Ausschnitt hätten dem Bild gut getan. 
Fehler #2: 
Der Zaun im Vordergrund schafft eine Barriere und führt den Betrachter nicht ins Bild hinein, sondern aus ihm heraus. 
Fehler #3: 
Büsche, Gräser und Bäume sind zu gleichförmig und deren Formen zu langweilig. 
Fehler #4: 
Die Bildfarben sind mit Orangebraun und Grün zwar komplementär angedacht, jedoch ist deren Gesamtanteil fast 50:50. Es fehlt der echte Kick. Ein ungleiches Verhältnis (33% Grün zu 66% Orange) wirkt weitaus spannender.

A short lesson on landscape painting. Unfortunately, not every landscape painting is a complete success. Especially if you paint en plein air in the field. Often there's an outcome of infamous 50% garbage. 
Pah! Fifty percent would make me a lucky guy. 
Error # 1 
is the choice of the subject or the picture detail. I have chosen far too many details. A drastic reduction of shapes and / or a better detail would have been better. 
Error # 2: 
The fence in the foreground creates a barrier and does not lead the viewer into the image, but out of it. 
Error # 3: 
The bushes, grasses and trees are too uniform and the overall shapes are too boring. 
Error # 4: 
The picture colors are selected well in orange-brown and green, but the overall proportions are too similar. Where's the kick? An unequal ratio (2/3 green to 1/3 orange) is far more exciting.

Wo ist das Highlight?
Mit der Vorskizze in hell-dunkel als schnelle Untermalung bin ich noch annähernd zufrieden. Doch auch hier sieht man bereits, dass es keinen echten Fokus im Bild gibt, auf den sich die Blicke richten sollen. Wenn man hier doch nur eine Scheune, einen Trecker oder einen anderen Blickfang hätte.

Where is the highlight?
I am kind of okay with the presketch so far. Light and dark ratio isn't too bad. But you already see that there is no real focus which leads your eye into the painting. No barn, no cow, no tractor or other eye catcher.

Die Umwandlung in Graustufen zeigt Fehler #5 deutlich: Tonwerte beschreiben die Helligkeiten innerhalb einer Farbe. Je mehr Tonwerte man korrekt umsetzt, desto realistischer wird das Bild. In diesem Beispiel sind die Tonwerte nicht genug variiert, das Ganze wirkt zu gleich.

The grayscale image  clearly shows error # 5: Tonal values ​​describe the brightness within a color. The more tonal values, the more realistic the image gets. In this example, the tonal values ​​are not varied enough: No tension.

• Gespiegelt am PC - horizontally mirrored •

Das geht leider nur am Computer... durch eine einfache horizontale Spiegelung des Motivs wird die Komposition schon viel spannender. Die Formen laufen nun in eine angenehmere Richtung auf das obere Bilddrittel zu. 

Photoshop® does this for you: horizontal mirroring makes the composition much more exciting. The shapes now move towards the upper third of the image in a more comfortable direction.

• Quadratisches gespiegeltes Format - square mirrored format •

»Passepartout - Kunst im Nu!« 

Einer meiner Lieblingssprüche, der Bilder vor dem Papierkorb retten kann. Man wählt einfach den schönsten Teil oder einen besseren Ausschnitt aus seinem vermurksten Bild. Das Schöne an schlechten Bildern ist, dass man aus seinen Fehlern ja immer etwas fürs nächste Mal lernt. 

"Passepartout - art for you!" 

One of my favorite sayings that can save crappy paintings from the garbage chute. Just choose the best part of your lousy painting and put a frame around it. Sometimes this very part looks okay. The beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. Remember, that you learn the most from bad paintings.
