Nicht in U.S.A., wie man meinen sollte, sondern in Wietze nördlich von Hannover wurden 1858/59 die weltweit ersten Erdölbohrungen vorgenommen. Anfang des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts wurden hier bis zu 80% der der Gesamtölmenge Deutschlands gefördert. Man könnte auch sagen: Hier nahm das Elend des Öl- und Plastikzeitalters seinen Anfang.

Not in the U.S.A., as one might think, but in Wietze, north of Hanover, the world's first oil wells were drilled in 1858/59. At the beginning of the twentieth century, up to 80% of Germany's total oil volume was produced here. One could also say: This is where the misery of the oil and plastic age began.

Ce n'est pas aux États-Unis, comme on pourrait le croire, mais à Wietze, au nord de Hanovre, que les premiers puits de pétrole du monde ont été forés en 1858/59. Au début du vingtième siècle, jusqu'à 80 % du volume total de pétrole allemand y était produit. On pourrait aussi dire : c'est ici que la misère de l'ère du pétrole et du plastique a commencé.
