Les Boudines

Die vergangenen drei Tage haben wir im "Les Boudines", dem bezaubernden Chambre d'Hôtes von Valérie und Denis verbracht. Es liegt ruhig und abgeschieden auf einem schönen Bergrücken und bietet einen weiten Blick ins Tal.


The past three days we've spent in the cosy BnB of Valérie and Denis. It is quiet and secluded on a beautiful ridge and offers a wide view of the valley.

Sarlat

Die heute wieder restaurierten schön restaurierten Patrizierhäuser stammen meist aus der Zeit nach dem 100-jährigen Krieg. Sie gerieten nach der französischen Revolution in Vergessenheit. Geldmangel erhielt die Grundstruktur, die Häuser indes verfielen. 
Erst 1962 wurde Sarlat gerettet und durch ein staatliches Programm wiederaufgebaut. Die "Totenlaterne" (Laterne des Mortes) ist ein einzigartiges Bauwerk Sarlats mit heute nicht mehr bestimmbarer Funktion. So könnte es eine Totenkapelle, ein Verlies oder eine Warnleuchte gewesen sein. Ich tendiere eher zu einer Raketenabschussbasis oder einem überdimensionierten Zäpfchen.


The beautifully restored patrician houses date mostly from the period after the Hundred Years' War. They fell into oblivion after the French Revolution. By the lack of money, the houses fell into disrepair, however. 
Sarlat was rescued in 1962 and rebuilt by a governmental program. The "Dead Lantern" (Laterne des Mordes) is a unique building with an now unknown function. It could have been a mortuary chapel, a dungeon or a warning light. I tend to see a missile base or an oversized uvula.

Marktplatz-Arkaden

Die Häuser um den quadratischen Marktplatz von Monpazier sind durch Arkaden, die sich zum Platz hin öffnen, miteinander verbunden. Die Bastidenstadt wurde zum Glück nicht, wie viele andere, mit einer Durchgangsstraße verschandelt. ...Sonne. Sonne. Sonne!

Marketplace Arcades
The houses around the square of Monpazier are arcades that open out towards the square, connected to each other. The fortified city (Bastide) was fortunately not, like many others, blighted with a through road. Sun. Sun. Sun!

Monpazier

Inzwischen sind wir an der zweiten Etappe der "Tour de France", im Département Dordogne angekommen.1284 gründeten die Engländer Monpazier als eine Bastide zur Verlängerung Ihrer Verteidigungslinie im Périgord. Mitten im Oktober bei 24°C mit einem Café au Lait in der Sonne zu sitzen… so hatte ich mir das vorgestellt.

Meanwhile, we are on the second "étappe" of our "Tour de France", in the Dordogne. Monpazier was founded 1284 by the English as a Bastide to extend their defense line in the Périgord. Sitting in the sun and enjoying a coffee latte in the middle of October at 75 degrees Fahrenheit.... that's what I had dreamt of.

Hafen von La Flotte

An einem etwas diesigem Vormittag kehrt das Meer langsam in den Hafen zurück. Bei Ebbe legen sich die Schiffe und Fischerboote einfach quer. Viele Einheimische sammeln Algen, Muscheln, Austern oder anderes dubioses Getier aus dem Schlick und nennen das Ganze "Trockenfischen".


La Flotte Harbour
On a slightly misty morning, the sea slowly returns to the port. At low tide, the ships and fishing boats lay just across. Many locals collect seaweed, mussels, oysters or other dubious creatures from the mud and call the whole thing "dry fishing".

Kirche von Loix

Der rote Vorplatz der Kirche von Loix bietet einen hervorragenden Kontrast zur hellen Fassade des Gemäuers. Von Zeit zu Zeit streicht die "Grande Dame" des Platzes, eine graue Mischlingskatze, um die Beine. (Katze im Bild gerade hinter dem Baum.)


The red square in front of the church of Loix provides an excellent contrast to the bright facade of its walls. From time to time, the "Grande Dame" of the square, a gray mixed breed cat, sneaks around my legs. (Cat is in the picture - just behind the tree.)

Phare des Baleines

Am Wochenende war die Insel noch von sonnenhungrigen Festlandbewohnern bevölkert. Heute kehrt die Ruhe der Nachsaison in die Orte zurück. Am schönen alten Leuchtturm der Île de Ré genieße ich das Malen, Zeichnen und Herumschlendern in den idyllischen Orten. 

At the weekend the island was still populated by sun-seeking continental residents. Today the tranquility of the low season is back in the villages. Near the beautiful old lighthouse of the Île de Ré I enjoy painting, drawing and strolling around on this idyllic island.

Bureau de Tabac

Ein Blick auf das kleine Tabac-Geschäft am Hafen von La Flotte. Hier kann man als Nichtraucher neben heimischen Tageszeitungen auch Postkarten und Briefmarken erstehen.

Der unermüdlich stapelnde Geselle auf unserem Markt muss heute als vorgefertigter Platzhalter herhalten. Ich bin auf dem Weg nach Frankreich an die Atlantikküste. Von dort werdet ihr dann die nächsten 14 Tage mit Skizzen und Aquarellen versorgt. "Fertige" Acryl- oder Ölbilder sind im Urlaub etwas schwieriger zu bewerkstelligen.

An einer Hauswand in der Nähe des Spielplatzes am ehemaligen Sprengelgelände steht in Riesenlettern geschrieben: "Die Revolution ist großartig, alles andere ist Quark." Großartig.

Sambesifahrt

Leider ist meine Zoo-Jahreskarte unlängst abgelaufen.
Die letzte Bootsfahrt auf dem Hannoveraner Sambesi muss dieses Jahr dann wohl ohne mich stattfinden.
Meine neue Karte hole ich mir erst zum Beginn des Winterzoos Ende November.

Zambezi Trip
My season zoo ticket recently expired. The last boat trip on the Hanoverian Zambezi this year has to take place without me. The renewal of my card has to wait till the beginning of the Winter Zoo in late November.
So, now I'm done with unpaid advertising.

An unexpectedly mild autumn afternoon with a magic cheerful play of light on the still warm facades. Inside, the tea kettle boils, and it all smells of freshly baked waffles.

Park King

Ein eigentümlicher Blick von einem Parkhausdach in Kingston, Ontario. Eigentlich war es Tag und die Sonne schien. Doch gefiel mir die eigensinnige Komposition nicht. Das Eigentliche wurde einfach nicht sichtbar. Dann entwickelte das Ganze eine Eigendynamik. So arbeitet ich schließlich alles eigenhändig in eine Nachtszene um. Ein eigenartiges Bild.

An uncommon view from a parking garage roof in Kingston, Ontario. Actually, I painted it like it used to be - a blue sunshiny day. But its whole composition made me feel blue. The real thing remained just invisible so I had a blue fit. Out of the blue the whole thing developed its own momentum. So I finally finished this painting by turning it into a blue night scene. A bluesy picture.

Mein 50igstes »Daily Painting«!
Was hier so aussieht, wie kiffende Playmobil-Nonnen, sind kleine Keramikfigürchen aus der südschwedischen Krimihauptstadt Ystadt. Dort spielen die beliebten Wallander-Krimis. Irgendwie ging die Geschichte so, dass diese verrückten Trompeter nachts jede Viertelstunde [!] vom Kirchturm posaunt haben, wenn es *kein* Feuer gab, also alles in Ordnung war.

My daily painting no. 50!
What maybe looks like pot smoking little plastic toy nuns, in reality are small ceramic figurines from the Swedish town Ystadt. Amongst others, here the famous Wallander mysteries take place. Anyway, the story goes so crazy, that they trumpet every quarter of an hour at night [!] from the church tower when there was * no * fire, so everything was fine.

Streetcars

sind diese kleinen, antik anmutenden Straßenbähnchen Torontos. Das System der Öffis funktioniert und ist erstaunlich effizient. Zur Rushhour kriechen dann auch mal drei oder mehr Trams hintereinander her.
Eine anachronistische Oase.

These small antique-looking trams build a lifeline of Toronto. The public transport system works amazingly efficient. During the rush hour often three or more streetcars crawl one after another. An anachronistic oasis.

Liegender Akt I

Nach längerer Pause habe ich gestern mal wieder ein paar »kalligraphische Akte« gemalt. Herausgekommen ist eine interessante kleine Studie, wie man 12 Minuten sein linkes Bein in der Luft hält, ohne dass es einschläft. Unten gibt's noch weitere Studienskizzen ohne Einschlaffaktor.

Yesterday, after a long break I've painted a couple of my »calligraphic nudes«. The result is a tiny interesting study, how to hold a leg for 12 minutes up in the air without getting numb. Below, there's yet another study sketches.

Ballhofplatz

Der Name Hannover stammt angeblich vom (im Alkoholrausch gesprochenen ?) »Hohen Ufer«. Jedenfalls war unsere Mittwochsskizziergruppe gestern dort unterwegs. Nahebei liegt der Ballhofplatz, einer meiner Lieblingsorte der Stadt. Die Skizze wurde vor Ort in Aquarell angefangen und im Atelier mit Acrylfarben fertiggestellt.

The name of Hanover allegedly comes from (the intoxicated mumbling of) »Hohes Ufer«.
Which does not mean »hangover« (but would fit nicely).
In any case, our urban sketching group was around there yesterday. Nearby there is the »Ball Yard«, one of my favorite places in town. The sketch was started locally in watercolor and finished in the studio with acrylic paints. You can still see the wet paint...

Monetisieren

Claude Monet hat zwischen 1892 und 1894 insgesamt
33 Ansichten der Kathedrale von Rouen in verschiedenen Lichtsituationen gemalt (bei Morgensonne, im Nebel, bei Sonnenuntergang usw.). Keine Angst! Bei mir wird es wohl bei dieser zweiten Version der Christuskirche bleiben. Diesmal mit einem besonders schönem Gargouille und in kalten Farben bei dunstigem Morgennebelsonnenschein.

Monetize
1892-1894, Claude Monet painted the Cathedral of Rouen in 33 different light situations (morning sun, foggy, sunset, etc.). But don't worry! For me it will remain in this second version of the Christ Church. This time with a very nice Gargouille and cold colors in misty morning sunshine.

Mal lustig, mal nett, mal Angst einflößend:
Die Wasserspeier an Christuskirche in Hannover.
Die ersten Exemplare wurden wohl bereits im 13. Jhd in Frankreich gesichtet. Seitdem »gurgeln« die Figuren das Ablaufwasser der Kirchendächer.

Sometimes funny, sometimes cute but mostly scary:
The gargoyles at Hanover's Christ Church. The first copies were sighted in France in the 13th century. Since then the sculptures »gargle« the effluent water off the church roofs.

Sonntagsspaziergang

Gestern war ich auf einem kleinen Rundgang durch mein Stadtviertel. Zwischen Mittellandkanal und dem Fernsehturm »Telemax« liegt der verträumte alte Ortskern von Groß-Buchholz. Mit seinen vielen alten zu Wohnhäusern und Restaurants umgebauten Fachwerk-Bauernhöfen und Scheunen sind hier zahlreiche romantische Malmotive zu finden

A Sunday's stroll
Yesterday I took a little neighbourhood tour. »Great-Beechwood« lies sleepily between the Middleland Canal and the TV tower, called »Telemax«. Numerous antique half-timbered farms and barns have been converted into romantic residences and restaurants.

Kochpause

Ein nicht zu unterschätzender Faktor beim Malen der »Daily Paintings« ist das Fertigwerden. Oft beginne ich die Bilder erst am Abend vorher. Damit diese am nächsten Tag dann zeitig an dieser Stelle hier stehen können, entscheide ich mich oft erst beim Malen, ob ein bestimmtes Detail verstärkt, verändert oder weggelassen wird. Was mag in diesem Bild wohl fehlen oder hinzugekommen sein?

What's cooking?
A not to be underestimated point in daily painting is, to finish the picture in time. Often I start painting the evening before. So when painting, I decide along the way, whether a particular detail should be enhanced, changed or completely omitted. So guess what's missing or added in this picture?
