Herbst-Anemonen

Bereits gestern sind die letzten schönen Anemonen in unserm Garten »abgeblüht«. Um der Wahrheit die Ehre zu geben: Eigentlich hat der heftige Regen die zarten Blütenblätter unverschämterweise einfach abgeschlagen. Vielleicht wollte sie mir auf diese Art auch nur dezent vergegenwärtigen, dass sie nichts davon hält, von mir gemalt zu werden. Was ihr aber glücklicherweise nicht rechtzeitig gelungen ist. Ich denke »Blumenmalen« wird auch eh' nicht mein Ding.

Japanese Anemones
Yesterday, in our garden, the rest of these beautiful anemones faded. To be honest, the last heavy rains easily blast away the delicate petals. Maybe she wanted to tell me discreetly, that she does not like to be painted by me. Fortunately I managed it just in time. Anyway, I think painting »floral still life« is not my cup of tea.

Regengott

Im mexikanischen Teotihuacán wurde der Regengott Quetzalcoatl verehrt. Als oberste Gottheit war sein Ebenbild auf vielen Gebäuden präsent und wurde von den Azteken, Tolteken und Mayas verehrt (Quelle: Wikipedia).
Aber wer hat denn bitteschön hier bei uns diesen Regengott überall hingemalt? Wie sonst lässt sich der viele Regen denn wohl erklären?
Das heutige Bild zeigt eine gewittrige Stimmung an einer mittelamerikanisch anmutenden Hauswand.

Rain God
A long time ago, in Teotihuacán (Mexico) the rain god Quetzalcoatl has been worshipped. As the supreme divinity, he was also present as a painting on many buildings. 
He has been honored by the Aztecs, Toltecs and Mayans (source: wikipedia).
So far so good, but who's to blame for painting this god allover here onto our walls? How else is can we explain the weather down here in Germany? Today's picture shows a thundery atmosphere. And a house wall as I could imagine to be located in Central America.

Lutherkirche

Dreieckige Plätze sind eine schöne Besonderheit. Der »Hof« am Couvenmuseum in Aachen oder auch der Platz an der Lutherkirche hier in Hannover sind städtebauliche Raritäten. Auch dieses Bild ist eine kleine Besonderheit, denn es ist mein 25. »Daily Painting« in diesem Weblog.

Lutheran Church
Triangular places are a peculiar feature. The »Hof« at the Couven Museum in Aix-La-Chapelle, or the place at the Lutheran Church here in Hanover are urban curiosities. This picture is special too, it's my 25th daily painting of this blog.

0024 Fernweh

Immer wenn es ans Malen in meinem Atelier unterm Dach im Haus in Hannover geht, sehe ich das Foto dieser Füße, welches ich damals heimlich in Schweden in Karlskrona auf Dragsö auf dem Campingplatz am Steg an der Klippe am Wasser der Ostsee gemacht habe. Das wollte ich schon lange einmal malen. (»Itchy feet« heißt im Englischen übrigens sowohl »Fernweh«, als auch »juckende Füße«, was bei der Anzahl von Stechmücken in Schweden ebenfalls gut passt).

Itchy Feet
Whenever it comes to painting in my studio in the attic in the house in Hanover, I see the photo of these feet, which I mugged secretly in Karlskrona in Sweden on the Dragsö Islandsteg at the campsite on the landing stage on the cliff by the waters of the Baltic Sea. I've always wanted to paint it.

Skizzenbuch

Von Zeit zu Zeit ist das gute alte Skizzenbuch vollgekritzelt. Dann muss natürlich ein neues her. Ich bevorzuge eine etwas raue naturweiße Papieroberfläche. Am liebsten habe ich auch hier quadratische Formate im Mindestformat 20 x 20 cm. Dünnes Papier kommt für mich nicht in Frage. Denn beim anschließenden Kolorieren mit Aquarellfarben soll es sich nicht wellen oder gar auflösen.

Sketchbook
From time to time, the good old sketchbook is filled with scribbles. Then I need a new one with a preferably slightly rough and natural white paper surface. Here, like in my daily paintings, I love the square Format (min 8 x 8 inch). Thin paper comes out of the question, because the subsequent coloring with water colors would curl it or destroy the fiber.

Künstlerbedarf

Die Muse, die dich täglich küsst. Der Mäzen, der für Wasser und Brot sorgt (besser: Wein und Pasta). Der Kritiker, der die gemalte Nasenlänge des Portraitierten bemängelt. Natürlich bedarf der Künstler zudem noch einer großen Anzahl an schillerndsten Farben, erlesensten Leinwänden, naturhaarigsten Pinseln und vielen weiteren beglückenden Malutensilien. Im hiesigen Künstlerparadies gibt es leider eine unverschämt »boese« Auswahl daran. Das Regal ist selten so leer - die Geldbörse jedoch umso schneller.

Artistic needs:
The Muse, who kisses you every day. The patron who provides water and bread (better: wine and pasta). The critic who says that your painted nose is crooked. Of course, the artist also requires a large number of dazzling colors, most exquisite canvases, the best hairiest brushes and many other uplifting art supplies. The local artist's paradise, offers unfortunately an outrageous »evil« choice. The shelves are rarely that empty - and the faster is the wallet.

Ungewöhnlich leer war dieser Parkplatz im Univiertel Torontos. Es gab kaum parkende Fahrzeuge und auch nur ein paar Werbeflyer an der Laterne. Gab es da eine Werbe-Razzia?

This was an unusally empty parking lot in the university district of Toronto. Ther were hardly any parked vehicles and only a couple of promo flyers on the lantern. Has an advertising-raid taken place here?

Street Life

Wer hier fleißig stammliest, hat vielleicht geahnt, dass am Wochenende wieder ein Kanadamotiv veröffentlicht wird: Selbst zu vorgerückter Stunde muss man in den Straßen im Zentrum von Toronto kein sonderlich mulmiges Gefühl haben. Die Stadt ist als die als unkriminellste Großstadt Nordamerikas bekannt. Dies ist eine nächtliche Straßenszene auf dem Heimweg zu Fuß ins Hotel.

If you are reading continously this blog, you perhaps sensed, that it's time for another Canada theme: Even at a late hour you have not to feel queasy in the streets of downtown Toronto. The city is known to be the most safest major city in North America. This is a nocturnal street scene on the way home on foot to the hotel.

Pirates of the Maschteich

Der kleine Weiher hinter Hannovers »Neuem Rathaus« lockt nicht nur am Wochenende viele Besucher. Die meist erwachsenen Freizeitkapitäne zelebrieren mit kindlichem Enthusiasmus das Zuwasserlassen und Steuern ihrer selbstgebauten Schiffsmodelle. Beim Zuschauen ist mir dieser bunte Seeräuber in die Fänge geraten und ich musste ihn sofort ins »Daily Painting«-Programm aufnehmen.

The small pond behind Hanover's »New Town Hall« attracts many adult boaters to launch their custom built RC ship models. While watching this childlike pleasure, this colorful pirate was caught in my claws and I had to take him immediately into my daily painting program.

Haus Tier

In der TV-Zeitschrift meiner Oma, die ich als Kind immer mit Spannung erwartete, gab es jede Woche »unser heiteres Suchspiel«. Dort hat der Zeichner Sepp Arnemann auf der Witzeseite jedesmal eine kleine Maus in den Zeichnungen versteckt. Auch ich habe diesmal -unbewusst- etwas versteckt: »Wer findet die Bergziege?«

Animal House
When I was a child, it was my weekly fun to look for the funnies in my grandma's TV magazine. In Sepp Arnemann's drawings there had always been hidden a tiny little mouse. Unconsciously, I've also hidden an animal in my painting: »Who discovers the mountain goat?«

Hinter der Uni

wird es dann noch etwas aufgekratzer und wilder.
Politische Graffitti an den Wänden beschwört den Geist vergangener Rebellionen. »Keine Reisen nach Alcatraz«, »Stoppt die Folksänger von Absurdistan«,
»Brecht lieber gleich hier«... ich kann mir sowas immer schlecht merken.

Behind the university
it will scratch up a little more confused and wilder. Political graffiti on the walls evokes the spirit of past rebellions. »No trips to Alcatraz«, »Stop the folk singers of Absurdistan«,
»Brecht better right here« [a pun on the German poet Bertold Brecht]...
I'm bad in remembering such stuff.

An der Uni

in Hannover gibt es auch ein paar schöne vernachlässigte Ecken. Zum Zeichnen eignen diese verschachtelten alten und neuen Gebäude jedenfalls hervorragend. Der eine oder andere von euch, der meine »Stadtlandschaften« kennt, wird diesen Stil vielleicht wiedererkennen.

At the University
in Hanover, there are also some nice neglected corners. It's fun to sketch these nested old and new buildings. Maybe the one or another recognizes my »urban landscape style«. I'm trying to refine this for quite a long time.

Waschtag

Auch dieses Wochenende heißt es wieder »Kanadazeit«. (Ich habe hier noch so viele Motive, die ich realisieren möchte.) Hier seht ihr mein idyllisches Lieblingshaus, welches ich beim Abendspaziergang auf der Algonquin Island entdeckte. Ein perfekter Ort. Danach ging es zum Dinner ins Rectory Café. Ich war die Hauptspeise des Abends. Die Mücken waren zufrieden.

Laundry Day
Weekend time - time again for »Canada«.
(I have so many motifs, I would like to realize.)
This idyllic house, I discovered during an evening walk on Algonquin Island. A perfect place to be. Then I went to dinner at the Rectory Cafe. I was the dish of the day. At least the mosquitoes were satisfied.

Wochenmarkt

Freitags nachmittags findet in unserer Nähe immer ein niedlicher Wochenmarkt statt. Die schnell aufgebauten Stände und Verkaufswagen... das Herumschlendern und Vergleichen der Ware... der nette Smalltalk mit Nachbarn oder das Feilschen mit den Händlern: So war es wahrscheinlich schon vor fünfzig, hundert oder noch mehr Jahren auf den Märkten dieser Welt. Ich mag diesen inspirierenden, »altmodischen« Reiz des Einkaufens jedenfalls sehr.

Market Day
Each Friday afternoon, there's a cute farmer's market nearby. The quickly assembled stalls and vending carts... the strolling around and the comparing of goods... the nice small talk with neighbors, or the haggling with the dealers. It's just like fifty, hundred or more years ago. I really like this inspiring, »old fashioned« way of shopping.

Norwegen 1981

Vor 30 Jahren habe ich auf einer Jugendfreizeit in Kjølabu (Gemeinde Nord-Aurdal) meine Frau kennengelernt.
Damals konnte natürlich niemand ahnen, was daraus wurde. Heute also ein kleines verkitschtes »Daily Painting« am Lagerfeuer. Zwei weitere abgebildete Personen sind immer noch gute Freunde. Waren es jedenfalls - bis ich dieses Bild gemalt habe. Erkennt ihr euch noch wieder?

Norway 1981
30 years ago at a youth camp in Kjølabu (Parish of N. Aurdal). Here I met my wife. Back then, no one could have guessed what binding effect this would have to this very day.
So today I present you a little kitschy »Daily Painting« at the campfire. Two of the other guys depicted are still good friends of mine. Well, they were at least - until I've painted this picture. Can you recognize yourselves?

Afrika im Ohr

Das vorerst letzte Zoobild zeigt  »Joco«, den nonchalanten männlichen Nachwuchs im Berberlöwengehege. Verträumt lauscht er den Geräuschen der heimischen Savanne (schreiende Kinder, Hundegebell, Geschirrgeklapper und Rettungshubschrauber). Der Bildtitel ist übrigens nicht zufällig gewählt, sondern durchaus wörtlich zu nehmen.

Africa in his ear
This last zoo pictures for now shows »Joco«.  He's the new nonchalant male offspring in the Berber lion habitat. He listens dreamily to the sounds of the urban savanna (screaming kids, barking dogs, clattering dishes and rescue helicopters). By the way, the painting's title is not chosen at random, but to be taken literally.
