Im Park der Domaine - In the park of the Domaine

Wir sind in Malaucène, einem umtriebigen Ort am Fuße des Mont Ventoux. Hier bereiten sich viele Radfahrer auf die schwierige Bergtour auf den Gipfel des 1.912 Meter hohen Berges vor. Ich sitze dann lieber im Hotel-Park und male eine schöne Ansicht der ehemaligen Seidenspinnerei-Fabrik.

We are in Malaucène, a bustling town at the foot of the Mont Ventoux. Many cyclists are preparing for the difficult mountain tour to the summit of the 1.912 m high mountain. I prefer to sit in the hotel park and paint.

Eine ganz und gar mittelalterliche Stadt im Departement Drôme. Hier habe ich ein paar schöne Stunden im Schatten der alten Gemäuer gesessen und diese Szene gemalt. Ein paar Häuser weiter trafen wir eine Studententruppe (Illustratoren-Klasse) aus Münster, die ebenfalls dort zeichneten.

An old medieval town in the Departement of Drôme. Here I painted this scene for a few pleasant hours in the shade of the old walls. A few houses upstairs we met a student group (illustrators class) from Muenster, which also sketched here.

Der zweite Zwischenstopp auf der Reise in die Provence. 

Die Stadt wird im Jahr 838 gegründet. 

Ursprung war eine Abtei des Erzbischofs Barnard. 

Das Motiv ist mein Blick in eine der Altstadtstraßen.

The second stop on my trip to the Provence.

The city is founded in the year 838.

It started with an abbey of the Archbishop Barnard.

The painting is my view in one of the old town streets.

Erste Etappe von Aachen aus ist die schöne Stadt an der französischen Mosel. Hier gibt es eine gut erhaltene ehemalige Prämonstratenserabtei. Nahe unseres Hotels habe ich diese skizziert, als gerade zwei Montgolfièren vorbeifuhren.

First stop was this beautiful city on the Moselle. We found a former well preserved Premonstratensian Abbey near our hotel. I just started these sketches, when two balloons passed by.

Ab heute sind wir unterwegs in den Süden via Lindlar, Köln und Aachen. Viel Fahrerei und Feierei. Kaum Zeit zum Malen. Dies ist ein Auftragsbild, das bisher noch nicht gepostet wurde. 

Starting today, we are on the road into the south via Lindlar, Cologne and Aachen. A lot of driving and partying. Hardly time to paint. This is a commissioned painting,  which had not yet been posted.

Am Mittwoch gab es eine professionelle Einführung ins (Reise-)Skizzieren mit Jens Hübner bei boesner Hannover. Er arbeitet nach dem Prinzip: »weniger ist mehr«. Ganz nach meinem Geschmack.

Heute habe ich mal wieder getestet, wie es sich anfühlt, mit Acrylfarben auf anderen Untergründen als Leinwand zu malen. Auf Aquarellpapier zum Beispiel geht das auch recht gut. Die Farbe trocknet nur noch rasanter. Automatisch malte ich auch eher »aquarelliger«,

Onion Bowl

Today I have tested once again, what it feels like to paint with acrylics on other surfaces as canvas. E.g. on watercolor paper that works quite well. Omly the paint dries even faster. Autonatically, I painted in a »watercolor-mode«.

1491 Ende einer Fliege

Okay, vielleicht etwas morbide, aber das Malen dieser kleinen Stubenfliege hat richtig Spaß gemacht. Und schließlich habe ich sie vorm Staubsauger gerettet und ihr ein Daily-Painting-Denkmal gesetzt. (Sie hieß übrigens Harry, was auch den »Derrick-Titel« erklärt. - Diesen Hinweis verstehen nur ältere Jahrgänge ab 50.)

Also nicht der Pinsel wurde getestet. Sondern eine andere Maltechnik mit Spachtel und Farbspritzern. Dachte eigentlich, es wäre passend, um einen Pinsel zu malen. Mmh - aber mir gefällt es jetzt nicht so dolle. 

Brush Test

Not the brush has been tested. But yet another technique with palette knife and splashed paint. Actually I thought it would be fitting to paint a brush. Uhm, but I don't like it that much.

1486 Continental

In Hannover gibt es auch eine andere große Firma, deren altes Gelände nun bald bebaut wird. Quasi eine »historische« Zeichnung, denn bald werden hier Häuser für mehrere tausend Menschen in der neuen »Wasserstadt« entstehen. Darunter ein kleines schnelles Bild, welches beim Kaffeetrinken am Stephansplatz entstand.

In Hanover there's another great company whose old premises will be developed soon. Basically this is an »historic« sketch, because soon here will be built houses and shelter for thousands of people in the new so called »WaterTown«.

The other sketch is a quick and dirty image which I've done while drinking coffee at the Stephansplatz.

Vorsicht Alliterationsalarm: 

Gestern waren die 1. HelmkeOpen im Helmkehof in Hannover Hainholz. Wir verbrachten einen sehr schönen Nachmittag hier. Es gab viel zu sehen und zum Staunen, wir hatten viele Besucher, nette Käufer und einen passenden Ausklang in Begleitung des benachbarten Herrenhäuser Feuerwerkfestivals. Nebenbei malte ich noch eine Demo-Skizze vom Helmkehof.

Caution alliteration alarm: Yesterday the 1st HelmkeOpen took place in the Helmkehof in Hanover Hainholz. We spent a lovely afternoon here. There was plenty to see and taste. We had many visitors, nice buyers and a furious finale accompanied by the neighboring fireworks festival. Incidentally, I painted a demo sketch from the Helmkehof.

Bei Nebel wird der Farbkontrast schwächer und Formen werden in der Ferne unschärfer und verschwinden. Das Licht kann nicht komplett durch den Nebel dringen, und erhellt die Szene nur diffus. Alle Gegenstände erscheinen grau und farblos. Dieses Bild habe ich für die Fog Challenge auf DPW gemalt.

In foggy conditions, the color contrast becomes weaker and shapes are blurred and are disappearing in the distance. The light can't fully penetrate through the fog and illuminates the scene only diffusely. All objects appear gray and colorless. This picture was painted for the Fog Challenge on DPW.

Gestern habe ich einen Brunetti-Krimi (nach den Büchern von Donna Leon) auf dem iPad geschaut. Egal, worum es sich dort inhaltlich handelt, am schönsten sind die Aufnahmen der Stadt. Die Barockkirche am Eingang zum Canal Grande ist zum Beispiel ein klassisches Motiv dem man als Maler kaum widerstehen kann.

Yesterday I watched a Brunetti thriller on the iPad (novels from Donna Leon). No matter what the plot is, most beautiful are the shots of the city. The Baroque church at the entrance to the Grand Canal, for example, is a classic motif which you can hardly resist as a painter.

Nach dem Gouache-Experiment packte mich der Ehrgeiz, es mal wieder mit Ölmalerei zu versuchen. Als Motiv diente dieses Naturbild eines Felsenhaufens an einem norwegischen Fjord.

Gestern habe ich mich an das Experiment gewagt und mit Gouachefraben vor Ort auf dem Stephansplatz in Hannover gemalt. Die August-Aufgabe stellte James Gurney auf seinem Blog »GurneyJourney«. Zudem durfte ich nur 3 Farben verwenden. Das Ergebnis hat der nette Blumenhändler im Tausch gegen Grünware erhalten. 

Yesterday I dared to do the experiment and did my daily painting with Gouache on the Stephansplatz in Hanover. The challenge was given by James Gurney on his blog »GurneyJourney«. Moreover, I was allowed to use only 3 colors.

Gestern haben wir am Ballhof in Hannover gemalt. Mit dem Ergebnis bin ich diesmal sogar sehr zufrieden. Das Bild zeigt ganz gut die Stimmung in der engen Gasse und das schöne Nachmittagslicht.

Yesterday we painted at the Ballhof here in Hanover. This tine, I am rather satisfied with the resulting painting. It shows the light and the mood in this narrow street quite well.

Und werden für Anti-Schuppen-Schampoos kleine Holzhütten geopfert? 

Green Apple

When thinking about this title, a hair shampoo from my childhood days came in my mind. Are true green apples losing their lives for this stuff?

And what about anti dandruff shampoo?

What the heck does this word come from?

The Monuments Men

Genau vis-à-vis des gestrigen ruinösen Gebäudes befindet sich dieses nette Ensemble, in dem sich das Niedersächsische Landesamt für Denkmalpflege befindet. Auch schön.

Just vis-à-vis of yesterday's ruinous building you'll find this nice ensemble in which the Lower Saxony State Office of Historic Monuments is located. Very nice.

1468 Emmichplatz Plein Air

Das sind die Überreste des "Neuen Hauses", eines Konzertcafés am Rande der Eilenriede. Im Krieg wurde das Haus stark beschädigt. Beim Neubau der Musikhochschule 1970 wurde es dann so als Teilruine belassen. Leider war der andere interessante Blickwinkel zu sonnig zum Malen. Darum ist es nun eine eher undynamische dreigeteilte Ansicht geworden. 

These are the remains of the "New House", a concert cafe on the edge of the Eilenriede Forest. During the war the house was heavily damaged. In 1970, when the new Music Academy was constructed, some ruins remained in front of it. Unfortunately, the interesting point of view was too sunny for painting. That is why it has become a rather non-dynamic three-parted view.

1467 NeuroScience Plein Air

The Sketch

Auch gestern trieb es mich wieder zum Malen in die Mittagshitze nach draußen.

Diesmal war das hochmoderne Neuro Science Institute mit dahinter stehendem Fernsehturm TeleMax mein Motiv. Das Gebäude hat eine ganz lustige Form, die an ein Gehirn erinnert. Davor in alter Funktion ein Telegrafenmast von anno dazumal.

Yesterday I went painting again outside into the high noon heat of the Neuro Science Institute. Behind its's the TV Tower Telemax. and in front of this highly technical stuff you'll find an old fashinoned telegraph pole.
