Audrey III

Momentan versuche ich ein bisschen mit Schärfe und Unschärfe zu arbeiten. Das kann beim Fotografieren ganz einfach durch eine große Blende und damit begrenztem Schärfebereich realisiert werden. Beim Malen hat man einerseits mehr Flexibilität, und andererseits auch mehr Kontrolle über das Ergebnis. Zudem soll das ganze zwar schon »irgendwie realistisch« wirken, aber keinesfalls fotorealistisch.

Right now I'm trying a bit of focus and blur work. This can easily be achieved when shooting with a wide aperture and thus a limited depth of field. When painting, you have more flexibility on the one hand, and on the other hand even more control over the result. Moreover, the whole thing should appear »somehow realistic«, but in no way photo-realistic.

Audrey II

heißt die 'wahnsinnig tolle kleine Pflanze' aus dem »Kleinen Horrorladen«, die gerne ganz speziellen roten Saft trinkt. Mein eigentlich als Herbstbild geplantes Daily Painting mutierte heute am Ende auch ein wenig.

is called this 'strange and interesting plant' from the »Little Shop of Horrors«, which like this special red juice. My actually daily painting was planned as an autumn image but in the end mutated quite a bit too.

Wegskizzen II

Heute gibt es wieder ein paar der allzeit beliebten Wegskizzen, welche immer mal wieder unterwegs entstehen. Bei unnötigen oder freiwilligen Wartezeiten im Café (heute kein Bild dabei). Oder auf einer städtischen Streusandkiste sitzend und von türkischen Kindern umlagert. Oder natürlich auch sehr gerne mittwochs, beim regelmäßigen Zeichnen mit der »Mittwochs-Stadt-Skizzen-zeichnen-und-wie-wär's-danach-mit-'nem-leckeren-Kaffee-und-einem-Stück-Kuchen-Gruppe«.

Road Sketches II
Today you can see a few en route sketches. I often take the opportunity of scribbling and doodling when waiting in a nice Caféhouse (no sketch today). Or on the street, sitting on scattered sand box with turkish kids all around. Or on the always pretty drawing occasions in my regular urban sketching meetings with my »Wednesday-Urban-Sketching-And-How-About-Drinking-Coffee-And-Eating-Delicious-Cake-Club«.

Einer meiner stillen Lieblingsfilme ist immer noch »Eine Leiche zum Dessert«. Der Titel passt zum Fliegenpilz. Besonders auch zu der Stelle im Film, an der Sydney Wang seine berühmte Pilzgeschichte erzählen möchte, aber Sohn Nummer Eins dies verhindert. Tja, Filme gucken bildet!

Mushroom Dish
One of my favorite films still is »Murder by Death«. The title fits both the fly agaric. But its also suits perfectly to the point in the movie, when Sydney Wang tries to tell his famous mushroom story, but son number one prevents this unwillingly. Well, watching movies forms character! Another famous quote: Willie Wang: Why do I do all the dirty work, Pop? Sidney Wang: Cause your mother not here to do it.

Schlossbergweg

Im abendlichen Dunst gelegen, bietet hier der Freiburger Schlossberg einen herrlichen Weg für einen Herbstspaziergang. Weniger Geübte kommen beim Aufstieg zum Schlossbergturm leicht ins Schwitzen, werden aber mit einem gigantischen Ausblick über die Stadt belohnt.

Castle Hill 
Located in the evening haze, the Freiburger Schlossberg offers a wonderful path for an autumn stroll. Less trained will quickly be short of breath when climbing the Schlossberg tower. But they will be rewarded with an awesome view to the city.

MalPapier

Ich möchte eine brauchbare Alternative finden, wie ich im baldigen Urlaub auch ein paar Acrylbilder hinbekomme, ohne Leinwände mitnehmen zu müssen. Das heutige Bild habe ich daher auf Spezial-Acrylmalpapier gemalt. Anders als auf einer Leinwand, wird hier die Farbe nahezu sofort trocken. Der reine Horror für mich! Die bei anderen Daily Paintern so beliebten Malplatten oder Gessoboards habe ich auch schon ausprobiert und bin nicht so amused.

Paperpaint
I want to find a viable alternative for me to paint in acrylic during my vacation in November. I don't want to carry lots of canvasses around. So the current painting was painted on special acrylic painting paper. Unlike on a canvas, here the color dries almost instantly. For me this is pure horror! Many other daily painters use gessoboards. Well I gave them try, but it's the same quick drying problem.

Abendschatten

Ich mag die Stunde kurz vor dem Sonnenuntergang. Nicht umsonst wird diese nicht nur bei Fotografen »Goldene Stunde« genannt. Diese Straßenszene spielt in England / Cornwall und war eigentlich im Frühjahr. Ich habe es einfach eingeherbstet. Ich empfehle, dazu den Song »Evening Shadows« von Van Morrison

I like the hours just before the sunset. Not only photographers call this time of the day »the golden hour«. This street scene happened to be in England / Cornwall. Actually it was in spring. I've just put the autumnal touch on it. I recommend listening to the song »Evening Shadow« by Van Morrison while watching the painting.

Spiegelleser wissen mehr. 
Besonders in Amerika, wo man den netten Spruch »Objekte, die man im Rückspiegel sieht, sind näher, als sie erscheinen« während der Fahrt echt schwer entziffern kann, ohne dem Vordermann draufzufahren.

Mirror readers know more. 
Especially in America, where the cute saying »Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear« can hardly be deciphered while driving without colliding with the car in front of you.

Couch Potatoes

Manchmal ist ein ganz müder Tag und man möchte eigentlich nur auf dem Sofa abhängen. Für solche Gelegenheiten wurde die Sofakartoffel erfunden. War ich aber nicht, da ich das ja gezeichnet habe. Bin wieder einmal bei Dr. Sketchy's gewesen und dort wurde ein ausgeschlafenes Oktoberfest gefeiert. An dessen Ende waren dann doch alle auf eine kreative Art erschöpft.

Sometimes it is a very tired day and you really want to hang out on the sofa. For such occasions, the couch potato was invented. Indeed, I was none, since I have been drawing once again at Dr. Sketchy's. But after their Oktoberfest - I am really tired now.

Mittagspausenphilosophen

Wieder ein größeres Format vom Wochenende, dass ich heute fertiggestellt habe. Jeden Mittag vergesellschaften sich die Büroangestellten der Büros von Downtown Toronto an der Ampel, um ihre Mittagspause im Schnellrestaurant oder im Park zu verbringen.

Lunch Philosophers
Again a larger format from the weekend that I now have completed. Every lunchtime, the office clerks from Downtown Toronto socialize at the traffic lights in order to spend their lunch hour in the fast-food restaurant or in the park.

Bully

Unseren schönen alten VW Bus von 1972 gibt es leider schon längst nicht mehr. Er brachte uns in Studienzeiten oft quer durch Europa. Über Berg und Tal. Von Trondheim im Norden bis Florenz im Süden. Mit gemächlichen 90 km/h Höchstgeschwindigkeit war dies eine echt coole und entspannte Art zu reisen. Und eine billige Art zu campen. 

Our beautiful old VW bus of 1972 does no longer exist since a very long time. In our university years he brought us all across Europe many times. Over steep hills and through deep dales. From Trondheim in the north to Florence in the south. With lazy 55 miles top speed, this was a really cool and relaxed way to travel. And a cheap way to camp.

So bleibt ein bisschen Spannung, was daraus wohl wird.

La Wiese

Kurz vor dem Blätterfall gibt es die Wiese noch ohne Laub. Mal wieder nett, an der alten Wirkungsstätte in Marburg zu arbeiten. Heute geht der Kurs noch weiter, mal sehen, was noch so entsteht. 

La Meadow
Just before they fall, there still is grass without too many leaves on top. After a long time, it's nice to work at old places in Marburg. Today, the painting class goes on, let's see what results it will bring.

Dieser Wolkenbruch tobte über der Ostsee, während wir im Trockenen in unserem VW-Camper saßen und »Kältezone« von Arnaldur Indriðason als Hörbuch lauschten. Der Regen setzt sich leider momentan in unseren Breiten überall ein wenig zu herbstlich durch, finde ich. 

Sea S​torm
This downpour raged across the Baltic Sea, while we stayed in our dry VW camper  and listened to »The draining lake« by Arnaldur Indriðason as an audiobook. This constant raining of the last days gets on my nerves.

Dr. House

Ein wenig windschief und verwegen. Mit sehr eigenem Charme und Charakter. Mal bedrohlich, aber auch genial. Dieses »House« steht stets am Abgrund. Ob es wohl von den blühenden Rosen errettet werden kann? 
Das Motiv des heutigen Daily Paintings ist das Film-Wohnhaus eines gewissen Norman B. (Nur für den Fall, dass es niemand gemerkt hat.)

A little askew and daring. With its very own charm and character. Also threatening as awesome. This »House« is permanently on the edge. Whether it can be well saved by the blooming roses?

Waldweg

Für Baumfans wie mich, ist der Herbst natürlich eine Zeit, in der man eigentlich andauernd ins Gehölz ziehen will, um Farbe aufzutanken. Noch überwiegt das Grün. Aber schon bald werden uns leuchtende Herbsttöne betören und uns auf farbenfrohe Daily Paintings hoffen lassen.

For tree fans like me, the fall is of course a time when you permanently want to refill your color tank by walking into the woods. Still outweighs the green. But soon we will bewitched by bright autumn colors. This will hopefully lead to some colorful daily paintings.
