Saint Martin de Ré

Am Wochenende war ich beim Intensiv-Malkurs in Marburg. Hier entstand das heutige »Daily Painting«. Es zeigt (m)eine Sicht hinab auf den Place de la République vom Kirchturm in Saint Martin de Ré. Vielleicht ist es deshalb etwas düsterer geworden, weil ich mich in der höheren Luft auf dem bröckeligen Turm nicht so wohl fühlte.

Last weekend I participated an intensive painting class in Marburg. Here I created my today's "Daily Painting". It shows my (dark) view of the Place de la République from the church tower of Saint Martin de Ré. Perhaps it has become more gloomy, because I'm a bit terrified of heights.

Ein kleines Schulstillleben aus einem kanadischem Museum in Fenelon Falls. An dieser Stelle eine Entschuldigung für meine englischen Übersetzungen. Ich hätte doch besser im Unterricht aufpassen sollen, anstatt »Alice Cooper« in die Tische zu ritzen.

Dundas bei Nacht

Wie gehabt, geht es an den Wochenenden zurück zu einigen kanadischen Eindrücken. Heute wieder vom Dundas Square, wo wir so manches Gläschen Rotwein im Hard Rock Café gekillt haben.

Doch hier irrt der Deutsche:
Was da gespielt wird ist Pétanque.
Der Rest stimmt natürlich.

What is the German imagination of an typical Frenchman? Of course, as a Gauloises smoking, a striped sweater wearing and pastis drinking boule player with a Basque beret.
But here the German is mistaking:
What is played there is pétanque.
The rest, of course, is true.

Inseltraum

Ein kleines Ferienhäuschen in Südfrankreich. In einem total authentischen und ursprünglichen Dorf. Natürlich ohne Touristen. Mit einem kleinen Atelier im Gartenpavillon.
Ich sitze jeden Tag im Sonnenschein auf meiner Bank am wohltemperierten Schwimmteich in dem die Schwäne majestätisch ihre Bahnen ziehen. Der Golden Retriever jagd tapsig nach einem farbenfrohen Schmetterling. Und die schöne Bäckerin bringt die noch warmen selbstgebackenen Croissants zum mittäglichen Frühstück.

Island Dream
A small holiday cottage in southern France. In a totally authentic and original village. Of course, no tourists. With a small studio in the garden pavilion. I am sitting every day in the sunshine on my little bench on the well-tempered swimming pond where the swans majestically move their paths. The Golden Retriever is hunting clumsily hunting after a colorful butterfly. And the beautiful baker's girl brings the warm home-baked croissants.

Freiburger Münster

Ein paar Details von der einzigen gotischen Kirche, die innerhalb dieser Epoche begonnen und auch fertiggestellt wurde (1200-1513).
»Unsere liebe Frau« misst 116 Meter.
Der Turmhelm wird derzeit aufwändig restauriert.

A few details of the only Gothic church which was completed within its period (1200-1513). "Our lovely Lady" measures 116 meters. The spire is being carefully restored.

Besançon

Die Stadt am Flüsschen Doubs im Osten Frankreichs ist unsere letzte französische Station. Überall in der Stadt fallen die hohen und vielfältigen Kamine auf, die teilweise bis hoch über die Dächer reichen. 

The city on the River Doubs in the east of France is our last French station. Strikingly are the high chimneys in all variations, sometimes towering high above the rooftops.

Coq au vin

Heute ein kleines Stillleben aus dem Chambre d'Hôte in Saint Romain, welches sehr liebevoll eingerichtet ist. Neben den Weinen gibt es hier auch vorzügliches Essen. Ein weiteres Lieblingsthema der Franzosen. Das Ergebnis ist logischerweise die Kombination von beidem, zum Beispiel in Form von Huhn in Wein.


Today a still life from the lovely decoration of our BnB room in Saint Romain. Next favorite theme of the French, besides wine, is food. The conclusion is the combination of both, for example in form of chicken in wine.

Bourgogne

Gestern sind wir in der Bourgogne angekommen. Hier in Saint Romain dreht sich alles um Wein. Pommard, Meursault und Volnay sind nur einige bekannte Weingüter. Ein Blick auf die Weinberge von Mandelot im Abendlicht.


Burgundy 
Yesterday we arrived in Burgundy. Here in Saint Romaine it's all about wine. Pommard, Meursault and Volnay are only a few well-known wineries. A view of the Mandelot's vineyards in the evening light.

Eau de Dordogne

Zum Abschluss der Eindrücke aus dem Périgord Noir, gibt es heute ein Detail eines Wasserablaufes mit Dach in einer Hausecke. Mitunter gibt es hier die verwegensten Konstruktionen aus alten Zeiten und dem Plastikzeitalter.


At the end of the impressions from the Périgord Noir, there is a detail of a water flow from the roof. Sometimes you see the wildest designs from ancient times combined with the plastic ages.

Beynac

Hoch über dem Dordognetal thront trutzig das Chateau de Beynac. Früher Schauplatz vieler Machtkämpfe zwischen Briten und Franzosen dient es heute dem Tourismus und als Filmkulisse. Zum Beispiel wurde hier für Luc Bessons "Jeanne D'Arc" gedreht. Das mittelalterliche Dorf wurde für "Chocolat" mit Juliette Binoche und Johnny Depp genutzt.

Defiantly perched high above the Dordogne Valley lies Chateau de Beynac. Previously scene of many power struggles between the British and French now it is used for tourism and film shootings. For example Luc Besson's "Joan of Arc" was filmed here.

Les Boudines

Die vergangenen drei Tage haben wir im "Les Boudines", dem bezaubernden Chambre d'Hôtes von Valérie und Denis verbracht. Es liegt ruhig und abgeschieden auf einem schönen Bergrücken und bietet einen weiten Blick ins Tal.


The past three days we've spent in the cosy BnB of Valérie and Denis. It is quiet and secluded on a beautiful ridge and offers a wide view of the valley.

Sarlat

Die heute wieder restaurierten schön restaurierten Patrizierhäuser stammen meist aus der Zeit nach dem 100-jährigen Krieg. Sie gerieten nach der französischen Revolution in Vergessenheit. Geldmangel erhielt die Grundstruktur, die Häuser indes verfielen. 
Erst 1962 wurde Sarlat gerettet und durch ein staatliches Programm wiederaufgebaut. Die "Totenlaterne" (Laterne des Mortes) ist ein einzigartiges Bauwerk Sarlats mit heute nicht mehr bestimmbarer Funktion. So könnte es eine Totenkapelle, ein Verlies oder eine Warnleuchte gewesen sein. Ich tendiere eher zu einer Raketenabschussbasis oder einem überdimensionierten Zäpfchen.


The beautifully restored patrician houses date mostly from the period after the Hundred Years' War. They fell into oblivion after the French Revolution. By the lack of money, the houses fell into disrepair, however. 
Sarlat was rescued in 1962 and rebuilt by a governmental program. The "Dead Lantern" (Laterne des Mordes) is a unique building with an now unknown function. It could have been a mortuary chapel, a dungeon or a warning light. I tend to see a missile base or an oversized uvula.

Marktplatz-Arkaden

Die Häuser um den quadratischen Marktplatz von Monpazier sind durch Arkaden, die sich zum Platz hin öffnen, miteinander verbunden. Die Bastidenstadt wurde zum Glück nicht, wie viele andere, mit einer Durchgangsstraße verschandelt. ...Sonne. Sonne. Sonne!

Marketplace Arcades
The houses around the square of Monpazier are arcades that open out towards the square, connected to each other. The fortified city (Bastide) was fortunately not, like many others, blighted with a through road. Sun. Sun. Sun!

Monpazier

Inzwischen sind wir an der zweiten Etappe der "Tour de France", im Département Dordogne angekommen.1284 gründeten die Engländer Monpazier als eine Bastide zur Verlängerung Ihrer Verteidigungslinie im Périgord. Mitten im Oktober bei 24°C mit einem Café au Lait in der Sonne zu sitzen… so hatte ich mir das vorgestellt.

Meanwhile, we are on the second "étappe" of our "Tour de France", in the Dordogne. Monpazier was founded 1284 by the English as a Bastide to extend their defense line in the Périgord. Sitting in the sun and enjoying a coffee latte in the middle of October at 75 degrees Fahrenheit.... that's what I had dreamt of.

Hafen von La Flotte

An einem etwas diesigem Vormittag kehrt das Meer langsam in den Hafen zurück. Bei Ebbe legen sich die Schiffe und Fischerboote einfach quer. Viele Einheimische sammeln Algen, Muscheln, Austern oder anderes dubioses Getier aus dem Schlick und nennen das Ganze "Trockenfischen".


La Flotte Harbour
On a slightly misty morning, the sea slowly returns to the port. At low tide, the ships and fishing boats lay just across. Many locals collect seaweed, mussels, oysters or other dubious creatures from the mud and call the whole thing "dry fishing".

Kirche von Loix

Der rote Vorplatz der Kirche von Loix bietet einen hervorragenden Kontrast zur hellen Fassade des Gemäuers. Von Zeit zu Zeit streicht die "Grande Dame" des Platzes, eine graue Mischlingskatze, um die Beine. (Katze im Bild gerade hinter dem Baum.)


The red square in front of the church of Loix provides an excellent contrast to the bright facade of its walls. From time to time, the "Grande Dame" of the square, a gray mixed breed cat, sneaks around my legs. (Cat is in the picture - just behind the tree.)
