Immer noch auf der Rücktour gibt es eine letzte Zeichnung aus der Provence. Das historische Café de France hat eine prima Lage direkt an der Kirche unter schattenspendenden Platanen.

Still on the return trip there is a final drawing from Provence. The historic Café de France has a great location right at the church under shady sycamore trees.

Wir sind nun doch langsam, sehr langsam auf dem Rückweg. In Pertuis war heute Markt und wir haben den obligatorischen Café au Lait in der Bar am Platze bestellt. Das Wetter ist mit 27°C geradezu hochsommerlich.

We are now slowly, but very slowly on the way back home. Today was market day in Pertuis and we have ordered the obligatory café au lait in the bar at the place. The weather is downright summery with 81° Fahrenheit.

Ein weiterer Blick auf die Montagne Sainte Victoire, einem der Lieblingsmotive des Provencemalers. Eigentlich mochte ich die Bilder von dem Kerl früher gar nicht. Aber wenn man die Landschaft sieht, bringt es einem die (damalige) Intention näher.

Another view of the Montagne Sainte Victoire, one of the favorite motifs of the famos Provencale painter. Actually, I never liked the paintings of this guy too much. But when you see the landscape, it brings his intention closer to me.

Gestern haben wir Cézannes Mühle in Le Tholunet besucht, ein Ort am Montagne Sainte Victoire. Das Gebäude wurde schön restauriert (ohne Geflügel) und von dort aus habe ich die Montagne gemalt. Eine ortsansässige Künstlerin verriet uns, dass man im Berg den Kopf eines alten Indianerhäuptlings erkennen kann. Nun denn. 

Yesterday we visited Cézanne's windmill in Le Tholunet, a place near the Montagne Sainte Victoire. The building has been beautifully restored (excluding the sails). From this mill I have painted the Mountains. A local artist told us that you can see the head of an old Indian chief in the rocks. So what.

Wir haben eine weitere Nacht in Apt verbracht und am Morgen ins kleine Städtchen Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt gefahren. Entgegen den Berichten in der lokalen Presse blieb unsere Urlaubsroute bisher vom Starkregen verschont. Andere südliche Provinzen hingegen wurden weggespült.

We spent another night in Apt and in the morning we visited the little town of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt Contrary to reports in the local press our vacation route so far had been spared from the heavy rain. Other southern provinces here in France however were washed away.

Die Kathedrale St. Anne ist von unserem Zimmer hier in Apt bestens sichtbar. Bei dieser Aussicht entschied ich mich zu meinem ersten Nachtbild aus dem Fenster vom Realmotiv. Auf dem Platz vor der Tür stand einst das römische Amphitheater von Apt.

The St. Anne's Cathedral is the perfect view from our room here in Apt. Therefore I chose it as my first daily painting night view from window. On the square in front of the door once was the Roman amphitheater of Apt.

Hier haben wir die Ausstellung der Carrières en Image besucht, bei denen an die riesigen Wände und Decken eines ehemaligen Bauxit-Bergwerks eine Multimediashow projiziert wird. Das Thema war Klimt und Wien. Oben ist dann die alte Stadt Les Baux mit zahlreichen Kirchen und mittelalterlichen Bauten.

Here we have visited the Carrières en Images, where the huge walls and the ceiling of an now unused bauxite mine a multimedia show is projectes. The theme was Klimt and Vienna. Above is the old town of Les Baux with numerous churches and medieval buildings.

Bei bestem Wetter (heute waren es bis zu 27°C) sind wir um den kleinen Ort Venasque herumgewandert. Besonders schöne Ausblicke, Weinfelder, Thymian am Wegesrand... was will man mehr?

In perfect weather (today it was up to 81° F) we were hiking around the small village of Venasque. Particularly beautiful views, vineyards, thyme along the way ... what more do you need?

Ein schöner Tag in Carpentras, in der Provence. 

Überall verlocken die schönen "authentischen" Läden und Cafés zum Verbleiben und Kaufen. 

Wir nutzen am liebsten ein gut gelegenes Café, um von dort aus die Passanten zu beobachten und natürlich um die täglichen Skizzen und Bilder zu machen.

A pretty day in Carpentras in the Provence. Everywhere you see these "authentic" stores, boutiques and restaurants. We love to sit in a nearby café and look at the people strolling around. And of course to sketch and paint.

Das zweite Bild zeigt heute meinen Eindruck davon, wie es rechts vom Haus in Richtung Feld und Straße aussieht. Velleron ist in der Nähe von Isle-Sur-La-Sorgue, wo man die schönsten Antiquitäten und alte Einrichtungsgegenstände finden kann.

The second painting shows my impression of how it looks further right from the direction of the field and road from our house. Velleron lies near Isle-Sur-La-Sorgue, where you can find the best antiques and antique furnishing.

Our holiday home in Velleron is a bit old furnished, but comfortable. We are enjoying the October sun, the French wine and we are cook like getting stars in the Guide Michelin.

Heute war der besonders schöne Markt in Uzès. Dort haben wir unsere Freunde getroffen. Gemeinsam sind wir nun in Velleron in unseren schönen Ferienwohnungen eingetroffen.

Today we were on the wonderful enjoyable market in Uzès. Here we met our good friends. Together, we have now arrived in Velleron in our vacation homes.

400 km und 5 Stunden Fahrt weiter südlich sind wir in Castagnols angekommen, einem schönen Chambre d'Hôte de Charme in der Nähe von Mende. Leider habe ich zu spät mit dem Malen angefangen und das köstliche Abendessen lockte... somit heute nur eine schnelle Skizze.

400 km and 5 hours drive further south we arrived in Castagnols, a charming B&B near Mende. Unfortunately, I started too late with the painting and the delicious dinner attracted ... therefore today just a quick sketch.

Einst war die Abtei das weltgrößte Kloster. Es war das Mutterhaus von 1.000 weiteren Klöstern. Im 16. Jhd. begann der Abstieg durch Religionskriege und der Tiefpunkt war die Plünderung während der französischen Revolution und die Verbrennung des Archivs. Die Bauten wurden zum Verkauf freigegeben und als Baumateriallager genutzt. Erst im 19. Jahrhundert begann man mit der Restaurierung der verbliebenen Bauten. Was wir heute sehen ist immer noch immens groß und der Reichtum des Klosters muss zu seiner Hochzeit unermesslich gewesen sein.

Abbey of Cluny 

Once the abbey was the largest monastery of the world. It was the mother house of 1,000 other monasteries. In the 16th century the fall began, due to religious wars. The ruin began during the French Revolution and the combustion of the archive. The buildings have been released for sale and were used as stock for building materials. In the 19th century, the restoration of the remaining buildings started. What we see today is still immense. The wealth of the monastery must have been immeasurably throughout the middle ages.

Earlier this year we visited the Gerhard Richter exhibition in Riehen / Switzerland at the Fondation Beyerler. This time we took a good look at the Gustave Courbet exhibition. That is the guy with the scandal picture "The Origin of the World" ...The installation is an artwork of Mr. Calder.

Heute sind wir schon im schönen Freiburg angekommen, unserer nächsten Zwischenstation auf dem Weg nach  Südfrankreich. Im Augustinermuseum gab es eine informative und gut präsentierte Ausstellung über den Bau des Freiburger Münsters.

Today we have arrived in the beautiful village of Freiburg, our next stop on the way to southern France. In the Augustiner Museum there was an informative and well presented exhibition about the building of the Freiburg Minster.

Der Urlaub steht nun wirklich sowas vor der Autotür. Morgen geht es los und ich bestücke meine Farbpalette mit den »Üblichen Verdächtigen«. Da ich sowieso nur mit den drei Grundfarben mische, ist das auch keine große Auswahl. Fürs Malen "en plein air" habe ich noch zwei zusätzliche Grüntöne am Start.

Our holidays are really pretty soon stepping at the doorway. Tomorrow we're leaving home. Today I loaded my color palette with the "usual suspects". Anyway, since I am mixing  only with the three primaries, it's not a big selection. For painting "en plein air" I have two additional greens at start.

Eigentlich wollte ich mich stimmungsmäßig schon auf den kommenden Urlaub einstimmen. Aber dann fiel mir dieses Motiv von den Bergen der kleinen französischen Insel La Réunion im indischen Ozean in die Hände, wo wir 2008 einen schönen Wanderurlaub hatten.

Actually I wanted to get in the mood for the upcoming holidays.But then this picture came to me out of the stack. This picture showed the mountains of the small French island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean . We had a great time hiking there in 2008.

Gestern gab es eine kleine Zoomalerei mit der Mittwochsgruppe.

Nachdem wir letzte Woche bei den Pferden geübt hatten, mussten diesmal die Pinguine und Elefanten dran glauben (gute Models). Die Eisbären hüpften diesmal nur wild und missmutig von einer Ecke zur anderen und entsprechend wacklig wurden die Skizzen. Da dürfen sich die Bären jetzt nicht wundern, wie Büffel auszusehen.

Yesterday there was a small zoo painting with my Wednesday Sketching pals. 

Last week we exercised ourselves painting some horses. Penguins and elephants make good models too. They were patiently and friendly posing for us. The polar bears were misbehaving kids and jumped around wild and were scowling from one corner to another. Accordingly the sketches are shaky. So the bears should not be surprised to look like buffalos.
