Am Mittwoch haben wir unser Skizziertreffen trotz des Regenwetters draußen an der Nikolaikirche in Hannover Limmer veranstalten können. Die Sonne brach sich den Weg durch die dicken Wolken und eine diesige Schwüle mit feuchtem Kanalgeruch schwang sich durch die Lüfte.

Heute ein Detail einer Wurzel eines amerikanischen Baumes. Das Ganze ist sehr grafisch geworden, gefällt mir aber -auch wegen der Farbgebung- ganz gut.

Musste es doch noch nachschlagen, aber der figürlich, geometrische oder vegetabilisch gestaltete Rundbogen an Portalen wird als Archivolte bezeichnet. Eine dieser gebildhauerten Figuren ist wohl der Erzengel Gabriel. Na, wer hat ihn gefunden?

Where's Gabriel? 

I had to google this up, but the figurative, geometric or vegetable-shaped arch of portals is called archivolt. One of these sculpted figures is probably the archangel Gabriel. Will you find him?

Mohnblumen werden bei mir und meiner Frau -wie im Englischen- Poppies genannt. Ich weiß gar nicht mehr, wie es dazu kam. Werde da nochmal nachforschen. Sie blühen momentan hier jedenfalls wild überall rum.

My wife and me are calling them only poppies too, although we don't speak English often with other. I can not remember how this came about. Will investigate about this. Currently they are around here in full wild bloom everywhere.

Nahe am Plaça Ramon Llull, einem meiner tummeligen Lieblingsplätze Mallorcas, liegt die schöne  Kartause von Valldemossa. Diese ist eine der am meisten besuchten Sehenswürdigkeiten auf Mallorca. Fréderic Chopin verbrachte dort 1838/39 zusammen mit seiner Gespielin George Sand einen langen Winter und komponierte seine größten Tuberkulosehits...oder so.

Close to the Plaça Ramon Llull, one of my favorite lively places of Majorca, lies the beautiful Valldemossa Charterhouse. It is one of the most visited attractions on the island. In 1838/39 Frederic Chopin spent a long winter here together with his plymate George Sand and composed his greatest tuberculosis hits ... or so.

Dieses hier begann eigentlich als kleine Übung auf einem Stück Probe-Aquarellpapier von boesner. Während der Speillänge der CD »synkronized« von Jamiroquai, wurde daraus eine nette Studie. Mehr aber auch nicht.
Fazit 1: Man kann auf dickem Aquarellpapier auch prima mit Acrylfarben arbeiten.
Okay, das wusste ich aber bereits vorher ;)
Fazit 2: Auch nicht neu: Man sollte eigentlich viel mehr experimentieren!
Testhalber startet die Auktion diesmal mit 1 $ (zuzüglich Versandkosten).

This one actually started as a small exercise on a sample of watercolor paper from boesner. While in the background Jamiroquai's »synkronized" was playing, it became a nice study. That's all. 
Conclusion 1: You can nicely work with acrylics on thick watercolor paper. 
But I already knew this before ;) 
Conclusion 2: You should really experiment a lot more! Ahem, this is also known. 
As a test, this auction starts at 1$.

Diese mallorquinische Stadt hat das schönes Santuari de San Salvador auf dem Berg. Und wenn man da wieder auf der Straße runtergeht kann man schön kucken und Fotos machen. Und Jahre später diese dann malen.

This Majorcan town has the beautiful Sanctuary of San Salvador on top of a hill. And when you stroll down the road, you'll have a beautiful sightseeing and you can take tons of photos to paint from, even years later.

Wie so vieles im Leben, kommt es auf die Werte an. So auch beim Malen der Landschaft auf dem Weg nach Son Marroig an der Westküste Mallorcas. Da ich gestern wieder eindeutig zu dunkel geworden bin, habe ich heute erst einmal eine Grauwertstudie gemacht und danach erst die Farben angelegt. Manchmal muss man eben »back to the basics« gehen, damit etwas draus wird. Zum Vergleich kann man sich die Farbwert-Skizzen und das Original unten anschauen.

Values of Son Marroig
Like many things in life, values are important. Expecially when painting. Here I go again.
»Back to the basics«. Since yesterday's painting has become too dark, today I have started this landscape near Son Marroig (Majorca) with a gray value study. Then I applied the colors. So this one turned out good, I think. For comparison, I put the color value sketches and the original below.

Lang ist es her, als wir uns hier auf weichen Piniennadeln nach der Wanderung ausgeruht haben. Unglaublich schönes türkises Meer und ein paar Boote, die im leichten Wellengang schaukeln. Ich versuche gerade, -äußerst sublim- die Vorzüge von Mallorca als nächstem Kurz-Urlaubsziel zu vermitteln.

Once upon a time on an island, where we rested here on soft pine needles after the walk. Incredibly beautiful turquoise sea and a few boats that rock in a slight swell. I'm trying -very sublime- to  convey the benefits of Mallorca as the next target for a short holiday.

Heißt in etwa Kaninchenbucht. Ob damit die mit den langen Ohren gemeint sind oder die Partyhasen, ist mir gerade entfallen. Man findet diese traumhaft schöne Bucht mit dem Blick auf die Insel La Dragonera jedenfalls am Westzipfel Mallorcas. 

I would translate this to something like »Bunnies Bay«. I am not sure, if this refers to those with the long ears or to the party bunnies. Whatever, you will finds this enchantingly beautiful bay on the western tip of Majorca. In the background lies the island of La Dragonera.

1045 An der alten Mühle

Mittwoch war ich wieder mit meiner Sketchinggruppe unterwegs. Wir hatten uns erneut die alte Bockwindmühle im Herrmann-Löns-Park als Motiv ausgesucht. Inzwischen malen viele von uns auch schon gerne einmal größere Formate "plein air". Das Skizzenbuch wird dann oft nur noch für die wirkliche Vorskizzen benutzt. Ich habe die Zeit genutzt und zwei Bilder in Acryl gemalt. Dabei habe ich meine inzwischen verbesserte Staffelei benutzt (Danke, Carol!). Es fehlt zwar immer noch der Plein-Air-Schirm, aber unter einer alten Linde war genug Schatten. 

The Old Mill 

Wednesday, I was painting with the sketching girls at an old windmill in an nearby park. Meanwhile, many of us like to paint even larger formats »plein air«. The sketchbook often is only used for preliminary sketches. I was biding my time to paint two pictures in acrylic. I've used my -now improved- easel (thanks Carol!) . Although it still lacks the plein-air umbrella... but I found a shady place under an old linden tree.

Irgendwie ist es nicht an der Zeit, weiße Mäuse zu sehen. Daher habe ich mich für eine blaue entschieden, die in Bergens KODE Museum zum Verkauf stand. Damals habe ich stattdessen aber lieber ein schönes Skizzenbuch gekauft. Interessant, dass man im englischsprachigen Raum pinke Elefanten anstelle weißer Mäuse (nicht) sieht.

Blue Mouse 
Somehow it is not time to see pink elephants. Therefore, I have decided for a blue mouse that was for sale in Bergen's Museum KODE. I have preferred to buy a nice sketchbook insteadof the mouse. Funny, that in German you (don't) see white mice instead of pink elephants.

Versucht gar nicht erst, den Titel zu deuten. Denn es war wirklich nur ein uralter Lappen, der dort an der Wand hing und seiner malerischen Umsetzung harrte.

Don't even try to interpret the title. Because it was really just an ancient cloth hanging on the wall, waiting for its picturesque implementation.

Wie einfach es doch ist, den Eindruck eines Gesichts (und dazu noch ein fröhliches) zu suggerieren. Dabei ist es doch nur ein altes Scheunentor, was hier gezeigt wird. 

Die Winks mit dem Zaunpfahl hierbei sind natürlich meine beiden Ausstellungen in der Haasenhof-Scheune (Mandelsloh) am nächsten Sonntag (29. Juni 2014) und die Ausstellung »Kunst in Bewegung« in Burgwedel (12./13. Juli 2014), wo ich ebenfalls in einer alten Scheune in Engensen ausstelle.
