'Xarah Von Den Vielenregen' (Xarah Of Lots of rain) was our model for Dr. Sketchy's AntiArtSchool on Sunday. Luckily her name was not program for the weather this week. The drawings are all on sketching paper with drawing ink and water soluble pencil.

So ähnlich hieß der Laden in der französischen oder belgischen Stadt, deren Name mir auch grade entfallen ist. Die haben in dem Laden irgendwas verkauft, was ich aber vergessen habe. Das Wetter war ganz gut, glaube ich - oder fing es nicht kurz danach an zu regnen? Aber ich kann mich genau erinnern, dass es Frühling oder Herbst war. 

Kurzgesagt: Ich muss noch ein paar Details ins Gesamtbild einfügen, damit alles stimmt.

Aromatics- this was the shop's name. Okay, not exactly, but something like this. It was in this French city whose name just won't happen to be remembered by me. Or was it in Belgium? I know that something was sold in this store or was it closed for renovation? Hey, but the weather was quite good, uhm- I think - or no, it just started to rain. One thing is for sure: It was spring or autumn.

In short: I need to insert some details into the overall picture before I can call it a day.

Unverkäufliche Studie. NFS.

Das Motiv ist der Kreuzgang des Klosters Walkenried im Harz an einem bewölkten Nachmittag. Ich wollte mal ausprobieren, wie das mit einer untermalten Struktur aussieht. Die Stimmung finde ich ganz gut wiedergegeben. Bin aber vom unregelmäßigen Untergrund nicht so überzeugt. Sieht wie ein Fehler in der Leinwand aus.

The subject is the cloister of the monastery Walkenried on an overcast day. I wanted to try what it looks like with structure paste underground. I like the ambiance of the picture.But I am not convinced of the irregular underground. Looks like a failure in the canvas.

Spätestens, wenn eine meiner lieben Webdesignkundinnen die Vorlage für die Herbstkarte schickt, weiß ich, dass bald wirklich Herbst wird. 

Nicht nur kulinarisch mag ich die Jahreszeit eigentlich. 

Es gibt dann wieder viel zu malen, zeichnen und zu schießen da draußen.

Ich schieße natürlich nur mit meiner Kamera.

Because there is then so much to paint, to draw and to shoot there.

Studien unverkäuflich - NFS

Gestern war ich mit einigen anderen Mitgliedern der DAG/GWS (Deutsche Aquarell Gesellschaft) in Dassel zum »paper day« bei Hahnemühle. Hier haben wir eine komplette Werksführung genossen. Nach einem kleinen Mittagssnack ging es in medias res. Wir durften die besten und neuesten Aquarellpapiere vor Ort testen. Nachher gab es noch viel Material fürs Testen im Atelier. Eine gelungene und lehrreiche Aktion »unseres« Vereins und Dank an Niko und Lars und natürlich die netten Damen und Herren bei Hahnemühle für die perfekte Organisation.

Yesterday I was with some other members of the DAG/GWS (German Watercolour Society) in Dassel at  the »paper day« with Hahnemuhle. We enjoyed a complete factory tour. After a small lunch snack we went in medias res. We could test some of the best and latest watercolor papers and on site. Afterwards there was a lot of material for testing in the studio. A successful and instructive campaign of »our« watercolor club. Special thanks to Niko and Lars and of course the nice ladies and gentlemen at Hahenemühle for their perfect organization.

Unteres Bild zeigt euch das Aquarell, das ich am Mittwoch am Lister Yachthafen von der Brücke über den Mittellandkanal gemalt habe. Da ich es zu Übungszwecken genau entgegen der prallen Sonne gemalt habe, gelang es mir nicht das darzustellen, was ich mir erhofft hatte.

Als Ausgleich habe ich wohl noch etwas Sonnenbrand abbekommen ;)

Gestern habe ich dann das Bild im Atelier komplett mit Acrylfarben übermalt und noch beschnitten. Der gewünschte Gegenlichteffekt kommt im oberen Bild dann wie gewünscht rüber und macht das Bild schön plastisch.

Backlighted Harbor

At first I like to show you a watercolor that I painted on Wednesday at the Lister marina. It is the view from the bridge over the Midland Canal. I've painted this as a backlight study in the opposing blazing sun. But the result was poor and it didn't present what I was longing for. 

To compensate, I have probably gotten a little sunburn ;) 

Yesterday I've overpainted the watercolor with acrylics in the studio. 

And here is the desired backlight effect which makes the picture threedimensional.

Leider kommt hier der »Beherrscher des Hafens«, also der alte Kran nicht gut genug zur Geltung.

Ja, das böse »H-Wort«... die Linden haben schon begonnen, das Laub gelb zu färben. Aber eigentlich wollte ich üben, wie man durchscheinendes Licht malt. Die durchscheinendenBlätter sind in einem hellen, kräftigen Gelb. Blätter im Schatten sind im dunkelsten Grün. Dazwischen gibt es welche, die den braunen Boden reflektieren und solche, die vom Blau des Himmels beeinflusst werden. 
Mein Dank gebührt em inspirierenden Buch von James Gurney »Color and Light«.

Look up in Fall
Yes, another bad F-word... :)
The Linden have already started to color their leaves yellow. But actually I wanted to practice how to paint translucent light. The transmitted light makes the leaves bright chromatic yellow. Leaves in the shade are in the darkest green. In between, there are those that reflect the brown ground and those who are affected by the blue of the sky.

Heute ein Bild mit einem fast philosophischen Anspruch.

Vor einigen Jahren las ich das interessante Buch »The Art Instinct« von Denis Dutton. Hierin versucht der Autor u.a. eine wissenschaftliche Analyse darüber zu erstellen, ob es einen angeborenen Instinkt für Kunst gibt. Unter vielen anderen zusammengetragenen Fakten, hat mich am meisten verwundert, dass das Bild einer afrikanisch anmutenden Landschaft mit Bergen und Wasser und einem 44%igen Blauanteil vom überwiegenden Teil der Menschheit (egal, ob Deutscher, Kenianer, Isländer, Eskimo, Russe, Ukrainer, Israeli, oder Palästinenser...) als »schön« empfunden wird. 

Was ist schön? Was ist Kunst?

Today, an image with an almost philosophical claim. 

A few years ago I read the interesting book »The Art Instinct« by Denis Dutton. Herein, the author tries to evolve a scientific analysis of whether there is an innate instinct for art. Among many gathered facts, what has surprised me the most is that a 44-percent-blue-landscape with kind of an African style with some mountains and some water is perceived as »beautiful« by the majority of mankind (whether Germans, Kenyans, Icelanders, Inuit, Russians, Ukrainians, Israelis, or Palestinians ...) 

What is beautiful? What is art?

Viele andere habe ich zur späteren malerischen Verwendung fotografiert. 

Open-Air

To celebrate the day +1111 we visited an open-air museum in Detmold.

We were very busy to look some of the 100 old farmhouses from the ancient times. One of them I have just finished before the rain and then colored it inside of a café. Many others farms I have photographed for later use as daily painting.

Irgendwann in der Mitte des vorigen Jahrtausends erfand Herr Bigbsy diesen Schwengel an der Gitarre, mit dem man die Tonhöhe um 1-2 Halbtöne variieren kann. Ich hatte das früher auch immer Schwengelgitarre genannt.

Gestern morgen war das erste, was ich auf dem iPad sah, mein Bild vom Vortag.
Und es gefiel mir nicht wirklich! Darum habe ich mir nochmal vorgenommen und einige Details verbessert, Farben und Schatten geändert etc. 
Puh! Nun gefällt es mir viel besser! 

Yesterday morning, the very first thing I saw on my iPad, was the painting I'd done the day before. And I really ... well I did not liked it too much! Therefore I changed some details, improved the colors and shadow parts etc. 
Whew! Now I like much better!

Nach dem Detail von gestern hatte ich mal wieder Lust, eine komplette Landschaftsszene zu malen. Das dazugehörige Foto entstand im Yellowstone Park, auf dem Weg zu den Fairy Falls. Zum Glück konnte ich da noch im Automatikmodus Fotos machen, obwohl die Kamera vorher ins Wasser gefallen war. 

Der »echte« Wasserfall indes war dann eher unspektakulär...

Waterfall

After the detail painting from yesterday I liked to paint a complete landscape scene. The corresponding photo was taken in the Yellowstone Park, on the way to the Fairy Falls. Luckily I was still able to take pictures (only in automatic mode), 'cause the camera was previously fallen into the water. 

However, the »real« waterfall was then rather less spectacular...
